SAILING OFF ON A DIFFERENT TACK...

I've been thinking (which isn't a necessarily good thing, especially considering the bottle of Pinot Noir that I've already consumed this evening, as well as the followup with some Triple Sec liquor.)

Personally, I was very, very, very amazed at our gathering at Marc & Carla's home. (Thank you both for opening your home to our scruffy crew.) I found the amount of frags that actually showed up, in one category or another, to be totally mind-boggling! (I'm no longer into frags, as my potential longevity might not be long enough for those frags to mature into colonies. So, I only buy "colonies" now.)

The sheer volume of frags then and there led me to thinking (whoops, again?)...

It occurred to me that perhaps at the upcoming frag event, we could offer a free frag to any individual who signed up for a yearly membership on that day. Of course, the frags would have to come from our existing membership. Personally, I'm offering at least 20 or possibly 30 frags for this event, though not necessarily 20 or 30 different frags genus/species.

I think we could pick up a few new members with this offer. BUT, there are (my suggested) caveats...

We can't offer our frags in small jars - every Tom, Dick and Harriet passing by would find it necessary to examine each and every jar. The frags need to be placed on a rack in a tank, along with appropriate lighting. An erasable board would need to be on display, with the common name of frags still available that day, to allow those already given away to be stricken from our offer.

Of my suggested equipment, I can only offer a display rack or two (depending on length). We'll still need a tank and appropriate coral lighting to highlight our offers.

If you think this idea might work and are willing to support the idea with frags and/or equipment and/or time, please post your commitment here and/or contact our officers with that same info (and thank you!).

(And finally, FWIW, I won't be driving/attending due to any inclement weather, so please take any inclusions concerning me into your plans.)

Thanks for reading this through..

Hi Bob,

This sounds awesome and thank you for volunteering to throw in those frags. However, due to the agreement I have with the event owner, we are not allowed to sell/give away any corals since we are not a regular vendor. I will keep this in mind for our next gathering/event though. I appreciate the thoughts and ideas.

Next time, we might consider going as a regular vendor (Grin.) I'm not too keen on this event owner anyway. I tracked him down at the most recent NJ Reef-a-Palooza, and was told I couldn't get a table this time because they were sold out, but that I could get one for 2026. If he was sold out six months in advance, why didn't he just get a bigger venue?

If we can't sell or give away corals, can we give away a frag voucher for a new person who shows up at one of our irregular meetings?

Finally, If we had more lead time, we could set up our own Frag Fest and tell visitors at this show when and where it will be occurring.

Hey Bob,

Don't worry. One step at a time. I just officially took the president role a few weeks ago, so it's definitely something we've already been discussing. As far as the show, our main goal right now is to get more exposure. We need more active members and this is a great way to promote the new team. The last show, not many people even knew there was a reef club in NJ. Worst part was, we werent prepared with material to give out. This show will be better. We got a lot of things in store for 2025. I appreciate the enthusiasm. Let's keep it going for the new year.
