Same here. Best tank I ever owned had MH (20K Radiums) + VHOs as supplemental lighting. I LOVED the look of that tank, and have never been able to grow corals (and especially clams) like that since. Miss the colors too. LEDs make everything look dull IMO.

I'm not a fan of bio balls because detritus gets trapped on them, so you have to rinse them (with saltwater) periodically.

Same here. I just know when the NO3 in my old 150 got up to 60-80ppm, dosing vinegar + running a biopellet reactor got them down to 5-10ppm.

I personally don't see much value in doing that because so long as you have both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, the nitrogen cycle is doing its thing. Adding more strains of nitrifying bacteria isn't going to help much in the long-run. It would be better to setup a refugium and/or use miracle...
