Trichodina
What You Need To Know:
* Ciliated protozoan parasite that is not usually problematic unless the potential host(s) are weakened, diseased or being housed in a system with poor water quality.
* Symptoms are mostly behavioral: Scratching/flashing, clamped fins, heavy breathing. Heavy...
Excellent read. This hobby has always been greed-driven, but what we're seeing nowadays borders on ridiculousness. But what bothers me the most is how unscrupulous (most of) the industry has become. Whenever I talk on the phone with a livestock wholesaler or speak with a vendor at MACNA... It...
The key is to raise copper simultaneously so all QTs reach therapeutic at the same time. Same goes for dosing prazi, metro, antibiotics, etc. When you do this all QTs are in sync and it's the same as if all the fish are in one giant QT together.
The 10 foot rule more applies to QT and DT (or...
Just wanted to post a video of my QT room, showing the tanks with aragonite in them.
The tanks look better, fish seem much calmer with a substrate, and copper absorption is minimal. Related link: Go ahead and use sand in QT
Black Ich (turbellarians)
What You Need To Know:
* Parasitic flatworm infestation; tangs are most often afflicted.
* Primary symptom is small black dots on the fish. (Not to be confused with Clownfish Hyper-Melanization.)
* Best chemical treatments for this disease are Praziquantel and...
You can use water from your DT for QT, but there's not a lot of nitrifying bacteria floating around in the water. What I do is put biomedia (e.g. sponge, Matrix, Ceramic Rings) down in my DT's sump so it can "collect" any nitrifying bacteria that passes through. Give it a month (or longer) to...
Yes; I've successfully tested CP on a number of Halichoeres wrasses now including H. melanurus.
Fairy wrasses, Leopards, Halichoeres spp, Anampses spp, Labroides spp, Thalassoma spp, Pseudocheilinops spp tolerate Chloroquine well.
Flashers, Coris spp & Pseudocheilinus spp DO NOT.
+1 Although heavy infestations of Ich & flukes in the gills can cause fish to swim into the flow as well. It's just more common with velvet due to that parasite's virulence.
Quarantine Protocols
Some prefer to just observe in quarantine and not use any medications unless necessary. This strategy can work, but it is important to set aside enough time in your day to observe for key behavioral symptoms of disease. These include loss of appetite, heavy breathing...
How to Setup a Quarantine Tank
The following are the bare essentials:
Aquarium (10-30 gallons seems to work for most people. Bigger QT lets you house more fish and gives you more wiggle room when it comes to ammonia. Smaller QT is cheaper, easier to maintain and can be setup/broke down...
You can order online here: https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/fish/fish-tank-sand-gravel-substrate/caribsea-aragonite-aquarium-sand
Either have it delivered or held at the store for pickup. $4.89 for 10lbs of aragonite, can't beat that! ;)
Probably 2-3 months before degradation of Chloroquine and other medications becomes an issue. That 10 lb bag cost me less than $5, but you could always remove the sand and clean it before resetting the QT back up. (Just put it in a bucket and flush it using tap water.)
I am in the process of...
I've never liked the bare bottom QT look, and have noticed how some fish seem uncomfortable in that environment. Especially sand burrowing wrasses, gobies and other fish who utilize sand as part of their daily routine. I've also seen tangs, angels, etc. fight their reflection on the bottom...
It's going to happen sooner or later... You treat with Prazipro (or General Cure), wait 5-7 days, do your 25% water change and dose again. And yet flukes remain on the fish. :(
One important step you should take when determining when is the best time to administer the second dose is use this...
