I had the same issue as well. Look for the thread called algea bloom. I brought everything down to undetectable and i had a dino and diatom explosion that almost killed my tank. I put on a UV sterilizer, turned off my skimmer (for a while) and added some potassium nitrate. Within a few days...

HMMM...interesting. The instructions indicate that both horizontal and vertical are acceptable. debating if i am going to leave this permenantly in anyway..so may be an answer to deploy only when needed.

Out of curiosity..how did you install it incorrectly?

UV sterilizer installed. Corallife 6x Turbo Twist. Went from a thick fog to best clarity ever over a period of 36 hours. Still probably have to get my water chemistry a bit more stabilized but crisis appears averted.
