Just turn it off and clean it while the skimmer is off, I left my skimmer and and let it overflow for air circulation, I put the cup back on on day 4 and had gfo and everything back up on day 5

Softies don't need a skimmer really, if you have a light bio load you may not even need the skimmer

I would just keep it simple, first area for sump, second for the fuge, third for the return

May or may not help but I've heard of you get him to attach to a spot you want him in and feed him there for a few days it helps keep them there, I did that with mine, don't know if it helped or not but the bta never moved from that spot.
