What are you using to calibrate your refractometer? If plain RO/DI or distilled water, it may be off. I would use a seawater standard solution like this. The Red Sea Pro Mg kit can be a little troublesome to use, especially having to mix each of the 5 drops of the reagent A for 15 seconds...
Something like this happened to another LFS on Rt. 70 near Rt. 73, In Living Color was the name IIRC, although it was bleach. I believe it was the owner who sabotaged his own store for the insurance.
Did anyone know of the problems that started May 9th? I just watched a report on the news about someone pouring mercury in one of Dominick's tanks. Evidently, the store has been closed for the past week, and has to start a hazmat clean up.
I would use fully saturated kalk dosed just below your normal evaporation and allow the ATO to make up the difference. I would then adjust your two part to make up the difference in your Ca/Alk needs. I saw an average increase of ~ .2 pH units with the use of kalk this way.
If you want to stay with a standard AC pump, I'd suggest an Eheim 1260, or a Sicce Syncra Silent 3.5. Or, if you're on a budget consider the Danner Mag 7.
