Egg crate works great. I would make it so the skimmer sits at its shallowest recommeded depth, i.e. 7" in this case, and remove one layer at a time, if you have to, until you find the sweet spot. If its new, make sure it has time to break in before you start to modify the stand.
When I started adding SPS to my system, they weren't coloring up as I had expected, and found that my N's and P's were a little on the high side. After some research/reading, I started to carbon dose using Vodka. This brought the N's and P's down a bit, but I started to get some cyano. I...
Along with Cerith, Nassarius Vibrex snails I would add a Conch or two to keep the upper part loose. For the rest of it, I would recommend the following:

I would also suggest you use these as a booster every couple years.
This is how I got started with my generator, by looking for something just large enough to power the tank in an emergency. In a relatively short period of time it grew into a 7000W, built a shed to run it in, installed a transfer switch, etc. Up til now I have never had the opportunity or run it...
This will be directly proportional to the amount of CO2 in your household atmosphere, for me one canister would last me about 10 days, which is why I bought it in the larger quatity. The tank was in my foyer, and its just me, Lynn and the dog, so it wasn't a lot of CO2 in my case.
I guess you could do that, as long as it didn't restrict the air flow. I had an old RO unit I used to make both a CO2 scrubber and an air filter, the only difference was the media that was used, i.e. Soda Lime for CO2, GAC for air. I use the CO2 on my system and gave the other one away.
You might be alright doing it that way, as long as your top off pump isn't adding too much at one time. Another option would be to use a dosing pump, and dose fully saturated (2tsp./gal.)lime water just a bit lower than your normal evaporation, and let your top off make up the difference.
The easiest/cheapest way would be to run an air line to an outside air source if practicable. You could place a sponge like filter on the outside opening of the tube to prevent any critters from getting in and blocking the tube. Another thought here would be to add a GAC filter in line with the...
