I love the look of black sand, but keep in mind, black sand may absorb more light, making the tank feel darker overall, depends on if that's what you're looking for. But the thing that deters me the most is people saying the black sand sticks to magnet glass cleaners and starts to scratch...

Put it where you think the most water will flow through it. IMO, less effective if the water is only moving around it.. mine sits directly under the floss cups. Water gets cleared of detritus, drips onto a sheet of marine pure, under a baffle and into another sheet before hitting skimmer and return.

Mine is just large enough for me to pull out the return pump for maintenance. IMHO, Other than that, size doesn't really matter? Rather have a larger space for the other chambers, which for me is the chaeto, and at one point, a rack.
