Jim, was it brand new egg crate or was it in saltwater prior to the test??

Ethan beat me to it, but I was going to say it's not the plastic but since egg crate is used to diffuse light in fixtures it's usually treated with chemicals which contain phosphates.

Yes, they are a very well tempered fish. Every tank should have one of these fish IMO. But they are sand dwellers so a sand bed is needed...
