They are all over my tank also. When the lights go out they seem to start floating around. I find dozens of them in my powerheads when I clean them. I'm nearby in Mt Laurel if you want to swing by and grab some.
Yes the emergency is only needs to be and open pipe at the inlet and outlet. You may need to tweak the height of the standpipe in your overflow a bit when you first set it up. Just use a slip fitting so that you can switch to a longer or shorter pipe if needed. Also your emergency overflow(s)...
One other tip when building your new manifold. Incorporate unions near your valves if you have the space. That way if you need to do something to the valves or want to reuse them you can just disconnect them at the unions.
The emergency will be fine with an elbow. I had several in my old setup. The emergency normally doesn't handle any flow unless your siphon needs to be adjusted. You want the emergency to be nice and noisy so that you know something is up when it is handling flow. For your siphon check out...
You basically use a a sodium hydroxide solution to break the bond between the gfo and phospate. The phosphate goes back into solution which you dispose off. I've followed the directions in this article to do a few batches. http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2010/10/chemistry
I've been using 6 (2 wp40s and 4 wp60s) in my tank. I've only had the 40s since this summer and the 60s for a month or two so its too soon to say how the will hold up. So far i am very happy with them. I had a pair of mp40s before them and the jebaos are much quieter. I also like that you...
I'm thinking about switching over to halides. I have one galaxy 250 / 400 Watt switchable ballast and could use 2 more. Lumateks appear to be the same so they would be fine also. Thanks for looking!
Time for a quick update. I picked a red sea regal angel a few weeks back. I had been debating whether to get one because my prior attempts didn't go well. I thought that if I would try one again I would take some good advice and try to get it settled into my display quickly. This would also...
Belize is great. I went there on my honeymoon. We spent a week in the rainforest and a second on turneffe island. The snorkeling was fantastic especially the trip to the Blue Hole. Fishing was great also.
Its generally a bit more rustic than the other major islands and the beaches aren't...
You will have two holes in each overflow, correct? If so here is how you would set it up. You would plumb one drain/siphon line to each overflow and they would be tee'd together with a gate valve near to end of line with the discharge just below the water level in your sump. The standpipes...
Go with a herbie setup and tie both drains together with a gate valve towards the end and the outlet just below the water level in the skimmer section.
I had the same experience with my old and new systems. Cyano was present when I was running them and quickly disappeared once I removed them. To be fair my current system was relatively new when I was running them and the cyano could have just been part of the normal growing pains. I haven't...
Second time in a month that I was out of town and my got stuck digging out from a blizzard. Guess I better buy some extra flowers on my way home tomorrow. :)
