Every time I dive I think of all the ways I can make my tank more like the sea I get overwhelmed.
First of all the sea is deep. Our animals know that they are in very shallow water and they would never venture into such shallow water if they had a choice. At the waters edge and in tide pools we...
Today was an interesting day of boating and collecting. I went to my usual place at low tide, the tide pool goes under a road and on the other side there is a lake that spills over these 20' long walls ibnto this tide pool. At high tide the lake is almost the same height as the sea.
Anyway these...
My bluestripped pipefish are again very pregnant. If I look close I can see the tiny stringy little babies stuck in his pouch under his belly.
No I can't get a picture. Those things are impossable to photograph. They are always in a cave and usually in the back of the tank chasing the baby...
Actually they survive over a year. I throw the pregnant ones into my tank. The adults are too large for my fish to eat. If you have triggers, lionfish, groupers or eels, they are great food. They are interesting, free and plentyful so I always put a dozen or so in my reef.
They are all over my marina. I can collect a 5 gallon pail of them in a few minutes in a place near my boat in Port Washington. Thats five gallons without water, just shrimp.
I use a 2 man net for that.
I just did one of the things that I love to do which I have mentioned before. I removed a bottle that I have not emptied in years and dumped it out in a flask to check out what is living in there. It is an entire eco system. There was a nice strand of seaweed growing right in the center like a...
The panels only work to reduce the bill. I still use power from the power company. When it is light out, the panels generate power. Not usually enough to supply all of my electricity needs but it saves about 1/3rd of my bill.
Ocean City is nice. We went there many years ago. I was showing my daughter how to surf after a hurricaine (very smart) and the waves were crashing on the sidewalk. I know that because I rode a wave in and could not get off it until I hit the sidewalk, head first. I broke my collarbone, tore the...
Fish like blackworms so much that they may refuse any other type of food. That happened with my Bangai Cardinals. They get spoiled and only want worms, so I always feed something else first.
I have been telling people about these things for 20 years. How come no one believed me?
Just feed something else besides blackworms or you will be sorry. The fish may not eat anything else. A fish like a copperband can and should be fed them every day. Thats what they eat. Worms
I think I know who said that 8)
Stick with the worms. Let me feed the salmon eggs.
If you feed the fish what they are supposed to eat, they "may" never get ich.
My fish never do, I wonder why
I use a 5'homemade venturi skimmer which is bolted to the back of the tank.
The overflow chamber is only a few inches wide and is also home made. The overflow chamber is just to feed the skimmer.
I have no sump
Five or six years ago I built and installed a trough in my main reef to control algae. I want algae in my tank but not growing on my corals so I built something which has better growing conditions than the main tank. I feel algae is healthy and if there is no algae at all, the tank has a...
I use a reverse UG filter and I also use an in tank overflow which feeds the protein skimmer. There is no sump and no exporting of water. A diatom filter is used occasionally a few times a year.
There were no sumps or drilled tanks when I started this system.
It has worked fine for almost 4 decades.
