I've run tanks with Hang-on's for 30 years. Theres still a lot of people using them and not complaining. It's not their money their spending. I rather spend $50 on a HOB then $500 to replace a tank with a RR one.

There is Green and Red bubble algae. If theres not too many, I would leave them alone. They look nice and won't hurt anything and the spores won't spread.
I do it this way now. I mix it once a week while I turn off my top off. For my top off, I only use an aqua lifter with the tubing crimped on the end, so it's almost a constant drip. Been working well for 2 months now.
You must be careful running it that way. They both need different flows. If you have too much flow running thru your Phos, it pulverizes the Phos which is poisonous. A lot of people do have success doing it your way tho.
You slide an air line tubing up the U tube from the back, all the way to the top of the tube. Make sure theres water in both the boxes and the U tube ends are under water. Suck on the tubing till the air is out of the tube. This will start the flow. Don't worry about the pocket of air left in...
