Im looking to try my hand at acrylic, i was thinking of trying a 12" cube to start, the only problem is i dont know where to get the acrylic. I know i need cell cast, should i order online or get it local, i also need some weldon.
Acrylic adheres to acrylic with a solvent which actually melts the seam creating a bond/joint that is stronger than the acrylic sheet itself. The chemical name is Methylene Chloride, a very toxic solvent that shouldnt be inhaled. A respirator should be used if indoors. It is a hazardous material, so shipping must be ground. Sometimes expensive to ship. I purchase it at www.tapplastics.com. http://www.tapplastics.com/shop/product.php?pid=132& They are fast and reasonable. A lot of teaching tips about acrylic online at that web site.
I order these Weld-on products.
IPS Weld-On 3 and 4 Cements are both high-strength, fast drying, clear, and water thin acrylic cements. Weld-On 3 is very fast drying and may blush under humid conditions. Always test your application for blushing (clouding) before finalizing glue choice, especially if an aesthetic seam is critical.
IPS Weld-On 16 Cement is a clear and thick cement for industrial grade acrylic. Heavy-bodied solvent for quick bond. Cements styrene, butyrate, and other plastics. Use on irregular edges, especially when high-strength (not bubble-free) joints are required.
Have fun.
