I'm looking to buy one these so when I go to buy more fish tanks I don't get lost. lol.
Just wanted to get some opioions. My friend has a Garmin and loves it. It would be cool to get it hooked up to the traffic so you see it coming.

When I was buying my Magelan 2200T GPS, I used this site to review and compare different models:

http://reviews.cnet.com/GPS/2001-3490_7-0.html?tag=cnetfd.dir

For a price I paid (300$) I am satisfied with it. The problems it has, are, I believe, common for all models - maps are not necessarily up to date (couple of years old) :-\ , when trying to find the fastest route, it assumes that you would drive only under the speed limit ;) and doesn't know anything about traffic lights :( , so the calculated optimal route is not necessarily really optimal. But, from what I have seen around this seems to be common (in this price range). Pros for that model is the ease of use, nice POI database, and the fact that it is not stubborn, it constantly reevaluates and recalculates the route, allows you to modify the route it computes, automatically detects that there is traffic jam and offers rerouteing.

i had a tomtom before i got the indash unit.. i wasn't really happy with it compared to the in dash unit, but that could make me bias! :)

For work at the restaurant we got 2 Garmins for the delivery drivers. Very easy to use and comes in different voices and languages.

and I loved my TomTom and can't stand my indash! Lots of POI, great voices, directed me in ways that I thought were appropriate (Made me feel more comfortable trusting it), hooks up to most Bluetooth phones. Easu to add memorized addresses to and very easy and intuitive interface.

I have a Garmin (399) and I prefer my parent's Tom tom (749) it has more features i like

I like our garmin 2620 (discontinued) but it seems to route us via the major highways even though a local road would be just as good. It always thinks route 1 to Aquatic Obsessions is ideal...yeah right.

There were at least two instances where it told me to "turn here" and I ended up in a parking lot with no exit (it tried to tell me to drive thru a fence). So having updated maps is definitely important!!!

Another minor issue I have is that it doesn't ever consider doing a 3 pt turn. It will make you go the loooooong route.

But the best is definitely when you are low on gas and dunno where to go - just ask the gps and you're on your way! I love typing in a few words of the name of a store and it figures it out. I've used it in texas, florida, illinois, and obviously the tri-state area and it has worked to near perfection.

One word of warning on the portables...

Even though supposedly our neck of the woods is crime free, the one thing that always is in the local papers is cars getting broken into because they left the portable GPS on the dash. Whatever you do with the new garmin - make sure you're willing to carry it or secure it somewhere in the car. I carry mine most of the time because I just dunno what the heat in the summer (baking in a parked car) will do to it.

I have a Magellan Roadmate 760 and I wouldn't trade it for ...well, maybe for the right Frag...but.. I love it!

I let a buddy borrow it to go to NC with and was completely LOST when he was gone...literally...

They're not always perfect as roads change... but for me... getting something with the most Points of Interest (POI) was paramount...

It doesn't do any MP3 or Pictures... but with 4 screaming kids, who's got time to listen to music through their GPS. lol
