Anyone have/had Atman skimmer pump issues?

Hello All,

I am looking to buy a bubble magus skimmer, but I read about some issues with Atman pumps. Has anyone had any long term experience with Atman pumps? If so any broken pumps, impellers, or impeller shafts?

Thanks,

Joe

Joe I picked up a used nac7 and I can't get the pump to work. It works when I take the cover off but as soon as I put it back on it won't work. I'd spend a little more money for reef octopus and sorry I didn't.

I should add that the skimmer was used and sold to me as only being 6 months old. So it's failure could be from something other than the pump just not being reliable.

I picked up a replacement pump for NAC7 I bought used and had no issues with it.

I have an SWC 160 with the Atman 2500 and here’s the secret for my pump. It kept on stalling when I first got it. I eventually found that if I put a couple telfon washers (available at HD) on the shaft on the front side of the pump, it works just fine. I’m guessing that the impeller stuff hits the front plate and the friction causes the pump to stall. It’s worked for me just fine. I should also tell you that I now have two additional pumps in reserve.

Now here’s the thing about Atmans….there not Atmans. The replacement pump is a Via Aqua for about $40. The only place I could find that sold Atmans was SoCal. However, I eventually found that Atmans are Via Aqua 2600 pumps at less than $40. The Socal Atman was $75.

That is good to know Paul!

I am torn between the nac5.5 and the octopus nwb 110. From reviews it looks like the BM produces more skim mate.

Both are good choices. I run a nwb110 on my frag tank which is about 40 gallons total. The skimmer really pulls out a lot of gunk from such a small tank with only 1 fish. When my display was set up I was running a dnwb-110 which is the external version and it was awesome as well and will be used when I set up my new display. I doubt that I would use another brand than reef octopus in the future. I have been very impressed with the quality, reliability and affordability of this brand.
