my brother in law as had a successful reef for years with out an RO DI. I really depends on how bad your water is. He also puts di-chlorinater in the water. If your TDS is like 500 it will not work.

I started the hobby using an inline charcoal filter instead of RODI. I was fish only for the first six months and everything went fine. When I started adding corals they did well for a few months then started to deteriorate. Greg hit upon the tap water as the culprit. I bought an AWI Typhoon III, did several water changes and everything has been fine since.
I also got a letter from the freehold township water supply that they were going to add chloramines which would have done in my tank overnight if I didn't have RODI.

IT'S NOT WORTH THE RISK!

I use to buy my RODI water from The Hidden Reef, at $.50 a gallon and only having a 10G tank at the time it wasn't bad. But once I upgraded to my 33L with 20L sump it was costing too much and I found I was making trips every week. At that point I couldn't afford a RODI system but instead I bought one of those DI only system and hooked that up to my kitchen sink. With a TDS meter inline I was able to see when TDS was rising. I could get 50-75 gallons out of a single cartridge. But now for Xmas I bought myself a 4 stage RODI system. Some people even use distilled water but that can get expensive. The best way is a RODI system with TDS meter. It will pay for itself real quick.

It kinda pisses me off to think about all the replacement cartridges I bought for that DI system because I didn't have the money upfront to get a RODI unit. I probably could have bought a really nice 5+ stage unit by now LMAO

I go through at least 10 gallons of top off a week as well as 30 gallons of water change every other week so buying by the gallon isn't an option. I use mine as a water supply to the fridge for ice and water as well as RODI for the tank. You cant imagine the difference in taste. It makes bottled water seem oily.

I don't use RO water on my 30 cube and know of atleast 2 others that don't use it either. I do add a dechlorinator (Prime) to every batch of water though, top off and water changes. I don't have any real issues with nusiance algae now that the tank has matured.

Thanks all I will be setting up a 40 cube and now I a wondering what I should expect as an evaporation rate with an open top and t5s. This will help me decide if I go the filter route or purchase ro/di water from Lfs

I don't use RO water in any of my tanks, fish only (total of ~ 800g) or my reef (90g). I use the dechlorinator stuff ...

My tanks may not be perfect, but everyone seems happy and healthy. I've had most of my tanks up for about 5 or 6 years now. I don't think many fish stores run RO in their large systems, so ... ?

FWIW ...

I evaporate 1/2 gallon a day with open top display and sump.

Be sure to test the RO water from the LFS, sometimes they're not as diligent about changing filters as hobbyists.

Was told by someone working at the Hidden Reef that they allow there RODI to get to 14TDS before they swap filters. Since finding that out, I dont buy water anymore, I'll make it. Plus I just got my new BRS 4 stage, 75GPD RODI system yesterday. Can't wait to put it to use.

I was told they don't even make RODI. Only RO. You gonna be so happy making your own water. Saving all that money.

I can't wait to see what impact it has on the tank!!! If thats really is the case with the Hidden Reef then I should see a HUGE improvement in just about everything with the tank then huh?

I bought my first plate coral there and some ricordia. But all there prices are way too expensive and for no reason. Now I go to the fish factory where they usually have good deals in there $10,15, and 20 sections.

Our hobby is all about the water...in a fish only tank, or a few leathers you can get away with most new jersey tap water...SPS, will not do well, even 14 tds is too high, especially if it is the wrong 14 tds. I like the spectra pure products. I would consider a RODI unit more important than a skimmer or lighting for corals.

Hotdogg makes sense it's all about the water..... When you put it that way it is so simple it the environment the animals live in so it shoul be the best quality .......
