I just got my first Apex and I was looking at salinity probes, but I read the reviews on BRS and they were not good. What is other people's experiences and what are the alternatives, if any?

Thx.

I’m using the Hana salinity pen. Has worked flawless for me. My salinity doesn’t change much so I only check periodically. I assume you have the El? Apex salinity probe near impossible to find. I just can’t justify spending almost 200.00 for the module probe if you can find it.

Tha Apex salinity probes have gotten a bad reputation, possibly undeserved. One problem is about where in the sump you put it. VCA even makes a "Stability Kit" for them that is designed to keep bubbles from forming on the probe's tip.

Here's an article you should read:

I'm not especially unhappy with mine. But I'm not ready to use one to switch my ATO from RODI to saltwater to raise or lower tank salinity based on the probe's reading. I don't know of any other probes that work with the Apex.

I simply use a hanna handheld and calibrate it frequently, it's always off a point or two from refractometer though.
