Got my water tested. A little because I was curious how good my tests were (plus they test things that I don't), and a little because I hate testing myself.
These are the results.
Perameters My Reading Natural Seawater Acceptable Range
Ammonia (NH3-4) - 0.009 Good 0.010 mg/L 0.000-0.050 mg/L
Nitrite (NO2) - 0.005 Good 0.010 mg/L 0.000-0.100 mg/L
Nitrate (NO3) - 0.5 Good 0.050 mg/L 0.000-25 mg/L
Phosphate (PO4) - 0.09 Good 0.030 mg/L 0.000-0.250 mg/L
Silica (SiO2-3) - 1.4 High 0.040 mg/L 0.000-0.500 mg/L
Potassium (K) - 397 Good 390 mg/L 350-450 mg/L
Calcium (Ca) - 497 High 400 mg/L 350-450 mg/L
Boron (B) - 2.3 Low 4.6 mg/L 3.0-6.0 mg/L
Molybdenum (Mo) - 0.1 Good 0.010 mg/L 0.0-0.12 mg/L
Strontium (Sr) - 8.9 Good 8.1 mg/L 5.0-12.0 mg/L
Magnesium (Mg) - 1268 Good 1280 mg/L 1100-1400 mg/L
Iodine (I¯) - 0.04 Good 0.060 mg/L 0.030-0.090 mg/L
Copper (Cu++) - 0.00 Good 0.030 mg/L 0.000-0.030 mg/L
Alkalinity (meq/L) - 2.33 Low 2.5 mg/L 2.5-5.0 meq/L
All in all I was pretty happy. Most of my water was on point.
I highlighted what my issues/problems are.
First was Silica (which I don't test for). It's off the charts. To fix this I got a high silica remover for my RO/DI from Will at A.O.
Next was Calcium which is also High but i'm not really worried about that too much. This is probably causing my other issue with low Alk. I got an Alk buffer from Will as well. Hopefully I can remedy this with just the buffer.
The one issue that I'm not sure how I feel about is the Boron being low. I know the salt I use (Coral Pro) is low in Boron, I read that in the report someone posted months ago. I'm not sure how to add boron to my tank. Not sure I want to either. I read that it's a buffer and helps to keep Calcium and Alk inline.
Anyway. Just wanted to share. I recommend doing the test through this website at least once. If I hadn't done it I would have never fixed my Silica issue and probably would have kept getting worse and worse algae outbreaks.
