Are LED's alone enough?

I am reluctant mentioning specific members, but the answer is yes. Hopefully they will chime in. As far as sponsors, Feng, at Red Sand, is totally LED.

We have a 120 with 2 of the chinese LEDs (I like to call the Fengxtures) from Feng and the SPS we have love them. We mostly have Montiporas under them now but after a trip to Bax's place there are plenty more under them. Nana, Valida, Miami Orchid, Birdsnest, Tort etc. Too early to tell as far as growth but the day after they hit the tank they all had some pretty nice PE.

That tank is under going an LED change from the Fengxtures to Radions so we will see how that goes!

I have been for a year on the frag tank and 6 months on the DT and my SPS have never looked better...

I can't remember where I read it from, but I'll search for it when I get home, but some "expert" wrote that a light photon is a light photon regardless of where or how it is generated. As long as the par is correct coral cannot tell the difference.

Not sure if this is true, but it does make sense to me.

Trivan, you are correct…a photon is a photon, regardless of where it came from. It is sort of like saying a volt is a volt, regardless of whether it came from a coal burning plant or hydroelectric plant. The problem is that photons are physics, and we are talking biology. In biology, intensity, wavelength and period are what is critical to the life forms (unless you have some Barry White on, where a low number of photons add to the atmosphere.)

whoaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa crazyyyy engineer.

I've run LED only for asmuch as 6 months and had good results. I've been running LEDs as main lights with MH supps for just under 4 hours and really like that combo ... a lot!
