Folks, if you've recently upgraded or renewed your annual club membership but it's still not active, please reach out to the BOD or a moderator. The PayPal system has a slight bug which it doesn't allow it to activate the account on it's own.
In my opinion there are no "deals on salt". The water is the key component in your system. While there is a lot of disagreement on which salt is best, in my mind you should always get top quality salt regardless of price. It's about the lest expensive thing in this hobby.
You'll get much better results, and your livestock will thank you for it. There is no point in starting off a new system with low quality water, because you used a cheep salt. That being said, if you can find a good price on a good salt go for it.
Bob's a long time NJRC Member. My guess is he already has a brand loyalty and is just looking for the place to get that salt with the best prices. Though I could be wrong!
long time member is an understatement. Founding member i believe. At least its formal organization. Anyway i have used Kents with a good deal of success so that is likly what i will stick with.
i like crystal sea, i dont know anyone else who uses it though. i bought it from absolutely fish in 2004 and have been using it since. animals and things has it in 150 gallon buckets for $40. does anyone on here use or know anyone who uses crystal sea marinemix?
I have tried Crystal Sea in the past, but will not use it now. I found that the magnesium levels were very low, and this made it difficult to maintain the alkalinity, calcium, pH balance.
However, it's always possible they changed their formula, and corrected this problem. I recommend getting a magnesium test kit and checking the level. If it's good, then great, keep using the salt. However, if it's low, change to a different brand. Also, if you think your reek only looks ok, not great, it could be the quality of the salt. It might be worth trying something else.
I am really happy with the Red Sea Coral Pro Salt.. that is a newer salt that wasn't around before Bob.. I get great numbers for ca, alk, Mg, ph in it... and its pretty cheap at the Hidden Reef..
I don't like most salts on the market because the potassium levels are way low. Most are in the 300 range and they should be at the 400 range. This is one of the important parameters that is most often overlooked and since there isn't a decent test kit for it I feel it's best to use a salt this has proper levels.
Crystal Sea is way low 280 ppm while IO and Reef Crystals is also pretty low at 300-320 respectfully. Red Sea PRO is one of the higher potassium based salts but still low at around 360. It does have good numbers otherwise.
I agree with DaveK in his sentiments on salt. With a good quality salt you can also do less water changes assuming your dissolved inorganic nutrients are low since the salt itself has better trace elements in it that don't need to be replenished as much.
I believe the original question was where to get the best deals on salt, not necessarily what's the best salt which is personal preference. Please keep the thread on track and not turn it into a chemical babble salt debate. We can start a new thread in the Advanced forum for that type of discussion.
Thanks Rich. The great salt debate lives on. Guess that hasn't changed.
I think i'm going to go to Hidden Reef. Sounds like they will have the best deal on salt
The hidden Reef is like Walmart. I makes all the other stores in the area look like they are trying to get your first born. The prices are great. I say we should do a drive by at Billys meeting to check them out.
