This is a rally tough question to answer as all the salts are a little different and everyone will swear with their brand. There have been studies done on the salts but none really recently.

For me, I have used Aquavitro for the last 2 or so years and like it.

if it is a fish only or a non sps system then instant ocean is the best salt to use. always consistent and on the lower price scale. If it is a reef tank with sps I am hearing a lot of good things from the aqua vitro. it is a bit on the pricey side though. that said you will probably save on additives.

Guess I add my experience too. I now usuing Reef Crystals again. I started that way then breifly switched to Red Sea coral pro. Both seemed to mix well. Tried Aqua Vitro and did not have a good experience. No matter how slow I mixed it it always preciptated. I just could not get that right. However I have read great things about it. Im just a pour it all in kind or guy. Im back to Reef Crystals.

You said you gonna start mixing your own saltwater? Where did you get it before this?

I either went to trop or captivating coral

Your gonna love not having to drive for water anymore. Plus your gonna save a ton.

Im not sure what Trop uses, but For some reason I recall someone at CC saying they use Seachem in thier regular salt mix. Not sure about thier premium mix. Though i could be wrong.

Ok so Iam going to give reef crystals a shot and see how it goes...

next question is how long do you run a powerhead in your mix container before adding to your display tank?

I have a maxi jet 900 in a 5 gal bucket do you think this is enough to get a good mix?

thats what I run now for my nano. the MJ900 is perfectly fine. only need a few hrs if that for the mixing. but i just leave mine overnight

I use Reef Crystals. I actually don't even need a heater in my water since the powerhead usually heats it up to temp. I just dump the RO in and then salt. I usually always have about 20 gallons on hand at all times mixed... Just leave it covered with small powerhead in it.

Same here. 20 gal tank with a aqueon power head. It in the garage so no heater right now, in the winter yes. I usually always have about 5-10 gals going. Reef Crystals is nice cause its kind of a dump and go salt. At least thats my experience.

I make the water and get it close to tank temperature before I add the salt. I find that it dissolved better in the mid 70s then if you add it to the cooler tap water. I have a heater and a power head in my container to keep things moving while the water is made.

I also use Red Sea Coral Pro, no complaints here.

I swore by tm and tmp for prob 7 yrs. Got two buckets that were all clumpy and didnt mix well, also i think it is what started an algae bloom in my tank and messed up a lot of my coral. Now i use a mix of anything thats at .26 and wet, av, io, rc, i use it all
