Best testkit?

need a good test kit for alk mag and Ca. My api is fine for trates and trites. Id preferably like one that i can get on amazon

Actually I wouldn't use the API for those either. If your on a budget, I'd get the new Red Sea Reef Foundation Pro Multi Kit. It contains all three, and the refills are really inexpensive. Dr. F&S has free shipping on order over $49.00, so buy some Spectrum pellets and get the free shipping.

+1 on Red Sea Pro kit. The chemistry is all the same with the kits…..a simple color changing titration…..however, Red Sea must have used Industrial Designers to add that little ergonomic design into the mixing/adding unit. This is what sold me on their kit. It makes using the kit that much easier.

Well my first though is WTH color am I trying to see. I have only tested for ALK as of now. I can't figure out what color is the start and end point. For the Alk the color is light blue to start orange to end. But I can't figure out which shade of the color.
Second and this is just me, I can't stand the tips on the syringe. I guess in reality it doesn't matter how much liquid you start with. Because the end point is determined by the amount used. I think once I get used to them I will like them very much. Up till now I've only used API kits except for mag which is a salifert. I've also got a pm out to someone for clarification on the color.

John, you what to continue adding until the “starting” color is completely gone and any additional drops causes no more color change. With Alk, you what to see no more blue…just all red. And since you never want to put any reagent back into the mother bottle, just take note of when you think you have reached end point, and continue to add a drop at a time to make sure it is the true end point. I hope that makes sense.

Ok how about the blue color. The directions say to start by adding .4ml of titrant. Then drop by drop till red is achieved. If I do that it skips right over the blue. So I started with clear and went drop at a time till I figured I had the right shade of blue then went to red. I think I'm making this harder then it really is.

As you start to add, it is blue….continue adding, while mixing/swirling…a drop at a time. It starts to change red. You don’t know if it is all red….maybe you see some blue. Take note of the volume….lets say 0.64 mls. You add another drop…did it change more red. If yes, than take note of that volume (say 0.66mls) and continue to add a drop at a time until no more change. If you see no more change, then that is your end point. AGAIN, do not add any unused reagent back into the mother bottle of reagent….that’s bad chemistry practice.

that is a nice deal and while im all about supporting our sponsors, i think ill just pay the 2 dollars and get it in a few days from amazon. thanks for all the help guys

Jim I did see that vid. I'm not getting anywhere near that color. Mine goes from light blue to pale grey(almost clear) to a light orange. I'm gonna have to pass by you or Paul's to see this done. Maybe something's wrong with my kit.

FWIW I use the Lamotte test kit for alk...love it. I don't need a chemistry degree either to figure out the results.

OK, I've been doing some searching here to help me with my problem. As it turns out these tests vary in the ending color. Users have noted pink, yellow, and orange. And all of these colors differ from the video. This does not leave me any closer to finding out my alk. To be honest at least with my API I knew when color changed from blue to yellow. The calcium test worked well, I have not yet used the mag test. I may have to find a different Alk test.

Where can I find the Lamotte kits
