Sid, in my opinion you don't want to add those things at all. They really don't do anything beneficial for your tank. They are nothing but dead organisms in a bottle, adding dead stuff to your tank isn't really a good idea. About the only thing those types of products are good for is feeding an algae bloom. Your coral won't really benefit from them.

Hey Sid, you should also look into Reed Mariculture's Reef Nutrition PhytoPlankton. Personally, I would go with (and have gone with) Reed over DT's any day.

Just to be open: There is no love loss between their two companies and Reed Mariculture has ALWAYS been an exceptionally good supporter of NJRC as well as many other local reef clubs. I personally have a very good relationship with the people at Reed.

I personally prefer using Phycopure but that's just me. http://www.seahorsesource.com/cgi-bin/shop/detail.cgi?id=201120 It is also a blend of different microalgaes but has a few different species and nutritional profile. All 3 products, Phycopure, DT's and the one from Reed mariculture, are good I just happen to prefer like the Phycopure myself.

As for when to use it, most folks will add a few ml's a week.

I used reef nutritions stuff in the past. Better to put in less than more. Use to add a little every 2-3 days in the evening at lights out

If you have Kent you can send it back to them with the receipt (if you still have it) says it right on the back of the bottles

i was using brightwell phyto green and jsut picked up marine snow.....i wasnt aware it was just dead stuff. i guess ive been giving the corals garbage for the past year. is it safe to say that since its worthless stuff, and the corals look great they dont need it? i thought carnations and non photo corals need that stuff?

I was going to target feed.. Kent recommends it.. Now i see why.. just dumping a bunch of dead goop in the tank is not good..

so, target feeding with the kent stuff and marine snow isnt a bad thing? ive always been leary of just adding foods to the flow and always target feed. i guess when it comes down to it, you just gotta look at the corals health and decide if the product gives results that you want

I guess with dead stuff you never get the full nutrition unless frozen

one thing with most of that is they say to frige after openining to prevent rapid deterioration, but there is no way of knowing how long it was on the shelf and the temps the bottle went through in transit. i think im just gonna have to learn how to set up a phyto tank and grow my own if it can be done without opening up a lab
