I have been slowly changing the filtration in my biocube 29 (Coralife) - it is almost a year old and lately I've have had issues keeping the nitrates down - the rest of the water parameters are perfect. I have about 30lbs of live rock and 10lbs of live sand - do I still need the bio balls? A friend suggested that they may be the cause of the nitrates.
I have two chemi-pure blue sacks at the bottom of the center chamber(just replaced them today after 4 months) , bio balls above the sacks filling the rest of the chamber and just added a nitrate remover pad instead of the stock biocube filter pad at the top. I also have a stock Coralife biocube skimmer in the first chamber. I've done multiple water changes over the last few weeks and did a good cleaning of the rear chambers. I hope that all finally does the trick but I am questioning the need for the bio balls. Any thoughts?
