How big is your tank? Is the tang in hiding a Hippo? My first guess would be that it is a Hippo and that the yellow tang is bullying it. Which tang was in the tank first?

+1 if he's hiding someone is beating him up..

Not to argue, but I beg to differ. I've had a few in my time. I have one that I can't chase away from my hand now he's so friendly and active. Others i have had, I never saw. They wedged themselves in behind a rock and stayed there. Obviously I can't watch the tank 24/7 so I don't know how often they came out, but I did notice them swimming at night. My buddy has one that comes out in short bursts and then goes back to its wedge. I would check the yellow first, see if he's the culprit, if not... you got a dud of a tang... it happens!

If its being bullied I have found the following useful:
1) Remove bully. House in a separate tank temporarily, 1 or 2 weeks.
2) Rearrange the rock work. All fish will stake out new territory letting the blue tang get comfortable.
3) Once the blue tang is comfortable introduce the yellow tang. You can put it in a small clear critter cage
to see how they react to each other and allow them to get use to each other.

Good luck.

the hippo wedged themselves in behind a rock and stayed there , in a 55 gai tank the yellow tang was there first . so a i geuss the best thing to do is seperate them . This raises a nother question ( I have another tank 50 gal)with a yellow tang already could i add yellow tang to this tank? and leave hippo in its tank????

I would say moving a yellow into another tank with a yellow is a bad idea. They tend to get aggressive towards same color/ species... moreso than other color/ species.

If it is the yellow tang picking on the newly added tang i would try the mirror trick for a week or 2 to give the blue/hippo time to really become familure with his new surroundings and establish his own stop in the tank. If the mirror doesn't work then one of the tangs has to go.

I agree with TanksNStuff. Moving the possibly aggressive yellow into another tank with another yellow in there is asking for trouble.

I have a powder blue and a clown tang added at different times powder was always picking on the clown for weeks. now they are best buddy's maybe you just need to give them time.

+1. Although they are the same size, the resident YT would have the advantage.
