Bob's Reef

Been wanting to start this for awhile now.. First off let me start by saying my system is not new. (although it may look new) I am probably the prime example of a person that has had more problems then success...

I started into the saltwater world a couple years ago. I had a 75 gallon fresh water fish tank that housed some large mouth bass that I caught from Etra lake which is very close to me. They were great at first but I got bored with them pretty fast. Also I would go into local fish stores and see all the coral and bright fish and I thought to myself I want a salt water tank!

I actually bought someone's whole 72 gallon bow front setup with a flame angel, and six line wrasse. Not knowing any better I ripped down his system bought a ton of home depot buckets and had it back up and running in one night... It was a long night not knowing anything about anything, hand on over flows, making salt water, ro water, really anything.. To be honest I was not really in the fresh water hobby long enough to fully understand that.

Well to make a long story shorter I had problems.. Many nights I woke up 2 am hearing water and finding water all over the place because of the hang on over flow getting clogged or the siphon breaking, to be honest I have ran into ever problem in the world (and still do). Well I got hooked anyway this hobby is definitely addicting, and the tank did pretty good all in all. But like everyone I wanted bigger and I was thinking about finishing my basement. So it began...

Here is a link to basically the full story so I don't have to retype it.

Just about everything about the tank has changed.. I had kids and almost sold my system due to lack of time. I would say I went 6 months to a year with out feeding or anything.. The only thing I did was refill my ro water so the tank did not run dry.

I have changed the rock work a 100 times, to be honest I moved rock around last night... I think I have it the way I want... But I say that every time haha. Really I have to stop moving rock around but I seem to finally have the ledges that I want. The bow front tank is not used anymore, I no longer have a refuguim, my 75 gallon is now my second tank and it is going to house softies and lps. I drilled the side of the 75 to have a drain. I have no faith with hang on over flows...

Well this is a start. At least I started it haha I will post pictures of what I have now fish, equipment, corals (or lack their of).. And I will post about problems I have recently had and still having.

Good going Bob and thanks for starting a TOTT thread.

I have seen Bob's setup a few times and it is amazing. He is a very handy fella.
I have known him for quite sometime now and I am glad he is more active on forums now.

Great tank setup and even a better guy!

+1 on more pictures!

the tanks look great, good job on making that sump and the seahorses for the display refuge is a good idea!

Yea it was a great good idea. The other display is no longer a refg. It was for awhile and I was going to get sea horses for it the more about how they need cooler water and needed to be fed multiple times and at that point I just had my first daughter and there was no way I could do it.

I no longer even really have a refg on the system. I had one setup under my 75 for awhile that was probably 20-30 gallons. I read up on them and from what most said for the amount of water I have the refuge should be 150 gallons for it to really work. I just don't have the room for that, and since it really would be just a pod growing ground and not helping with phosphate removal as much as it should I just figured ditch it because it was more overall maintenance. You can buy pods for pretty cheap too. Reefs to go always has some sales on them so I just figure if I need them get them. :-D

Just wanted to put a list of equipment that I have.

My tanks.
265 gallon display gonna be mostly SPS
75 gallon display gonna be mixed reef
A custom acrylic sump 75 gallon roughly

Reeflo dart return pump

3 Tunze 6105 circulating pumps in the 265 Gallon
Mp40 circulating pump in the 75 Gallon

GAC in a dual BRS reactor first camber is empty (open in case I want to use GFO)
BIO Pellets in a xl nextreef reactor
I have a canister I made with 3" PVC full of Seachem Matrix
In my sump I have MarinePure Spheres I think it is a gallon.
Everything is ran of my return pump, of the supply lines. I know mosteople pipe stuff off return lines but I was think detritus could build up that way. I use a filter sock to collect waste.

Protein skimmer is a SRO internal 5000 w/ 3 neck extensions.

Lighting is handled by LEDs
265 gallon lighting is 3 custom Rapid DIY fixtures. 2/1 blue/white (gonna add colors soon)
75 gallon currently has a 120 volt EVO light fixture. Gonna add more LEDs to this I think but the tank does not seem to mind 1 fixture.

I have a 29 gallon qt tank, a 20 gallon WC tank, a 13 gallon top off and a 42 gallon RO holding rubber made can.

Some pictures, even thou it is always a work in progress.. I have to finish some molding and redo some molding. When I switched out the 72 gallon for the 75 I made the hole in the wall larger.

Little confused. Went into the fish room just a couple minutes ago to find my skimmer half full of water. Check it to make sure nothing was stuck in the wheel slowing it down and nothing. Turned it on and off and nothing changed. I took the air hose on and off to see if it had salt build up or anything else and nothing looked in the venturi and nothing.

Well for some reason I have a extra front to the pump with the air hook up. So I put that on and the skimmer starts working... I don't understand this. There seems to nothing in the other one to stop air from getting in.. I am so confused.. And it kind of stinks because the other front has a setup to hook up to my bio pellets reactor. I am so lost.

I know it is not the reactor doing something because I closed the valve to it. Anyone got any idea? Same air hose, nothing different. Lol lost:confused:

I had a problem with my bubble blaster pump once. I wasnt getting any air intake either. I took the grey piece on the pump that connects the air tube and there was a small piece of pvc shaving stuck on the inside preventing air intake.

Yea went back down and put the other one on, before I did I looked in it and nothing. Anyway, put the other one back on and the same thing. But even tho the level was low the bubbles inside looked good.

So I closed the valve about a turn and the water level came up. So I am wondering if something is going on with the water. The only thing that changed today Was a couple hours ago I put prodibio reef booster in the tank. But I would think if anything that would make the skimmer go a little crazy. I am going to let it run over nite and see what happens.

So this morning I go downstairs and it's going absolutely crazy to the point where I have to open the valve all the way and it's still going a little crazy. Who knows?

Did you feed or do anything to the tank before the bubble levels dropped?

I started using biopellets around the time sandy hit. Since then I have lost all my sps. I had a good amount of problems between sandy, my reef angel head unit breaking And causing all kinds of problems and the biopellets. Anyway I am still trying to get these biopellets to a good steady point. They definitely work, they have stripped my water clean clean. After all this time I still have sps fading. About 2 weeks ago I removed about a Chinese food pint container of biopellets. And still I have 0 phos. I also am dealing with some cyno which I guess can be from to much carbon. I think I may try to take some more pellets out and see how that goes. I feed a good amount so I can not see feeding more. Guess I will what happens when I remove more pellets.

Excuse my smartphone phone's typos it ain't that smart... Haha
