Just a little something interesting I found that could maybe add some variety to reef keeping.
So recently I stumbled across an article in the news about a relatively unknown coral reef was found in,the mediterian sea off the cost of Italy. The reef was found in deep cold water and is about 2 miles in length and made up of mostly stony corals feed by the nutrient rich water instead of sunlight like corals in the tropical warm water regions.
Now cold water corals aren't exactly a new find in fact there are some found in waters of the North atlantic, but those are very mute in color pale and not exactly as attractive as there counter parts in Hawaii, the caribian, and austrailian/ pacific islander areas.
What makes these somewhat special is they do have some colors although for the moment we don't know there true potential as the only photos we have are taken in deep water with mostly white lighting, but it would be interesting to see if any of these corals will one day make it into trade as they may potentionally be a game changer for those wanting Sps but can't support the lighting requirments. Only time will tell but its something to follow up on for the time being.
Attached are a few photos that surfaced in the news articles
