So now that my ENTIRE tank is broken down....if I were to put all my rock outside in this hot sun, will it kill all the bryopsis that is all over the rock?
No!!! They dont call it the "devilweed" for nothing. Honestly as mentioned above, bleach the crap out of the rock and start over!!! I wouldnt be surprised to see it grow faster under the sun.
Steve, either way, you can’t put that rock right back into a tank and not expect it to cycle. You’ll have to wait the customary one month or so until the bacteria clean up the death mess that occurs. You can kick-start the process by adding one of the bacteria mixes they have, like Bio-Spira. But if you just put that rock back into a tank with fish, you’ll get death from the cycle it will go through.
I do know that baking my rock in the sun will cause me to have to cure it all again and cycle the tank again...but I figured the sun would kill everything off. The concensus seems to be that that isn't enough.
So how to I go about bleaching the rock? Do I bleach it before or after drying?
I also have bryopsis on the rocks I saved that have coral attached...I guess leaving them in the 55 until the Tech M kills it is a good idea.....
I also am going to either buy or build a new stand....
Come by I have a big black barrel that I used originally to bleach my rocks. I did 4 g of bleach and filled rest with water, let the rocks sit in it for 3 days, remove and dump the bleach. Then add 4g of vinegar add the rocks and let sit 3 days. THEN let dry out and THEN get a bucket of RO water and dip each rock in it giving it a nice shake. BOOM done and will take about a week/2 weeks and NO MORE BRYPOSIS
just a thought for next time you have an outbreak of bryopsis. slowly raising your magnesium levels up to around 1800 and maintaining it there for a couple of weeks will get rid of it. I used the kent mag. i have done this in the past with no ill effects on any of the livestock.
