camera lens

The camera I'm looking at has 2 lenses 1 18-55 155-200. is the 55-200 used for distance like sporing events ect. do you think its better to buy base camera with the 18-55 and then say a macro lens? I would use it for soccer games ect.

If you want to use it for soccer games you're going to want a fast sharp xx-200 or xx-300, which ever you can afford the best of. The 18-55 will be good for shooting indoors, large gatherings, etc. Rather than buy a kit cam, I'd get a body and the best lens you can afford that will cover your first priority. Then get the macro at a later time.

I'm going with the Nikon D40x the 55-200 is the vr image stabilization

Are you talking about kids' soccer games or real soccer games in soccer stadiums? For kids games you certainly don't need to go with anything longer then 80mm. 55-200 is very long lense, longer then what most people will use. Are you sure you want it? If you want most versatile zoom then go with 15-85. Macro lenses are used only if you can move very close to the object - like 3-4" away. If your objects will be more then 1' away, you don't need macro lenses.

I use a 70-200 for taking pictures of flag football, which is 1/2 the width of the standard football field and about 40 yards shorter. I'll even add a 1.4 or 2.0 to that for a little extra reach. Is a soccer field smaller?

It all depends on what type of pics you are taking. Basically, if your focal length is F (counting any extenders), then a person of average height will not fit in the frame if it is closer then roughly 70xF (kids, of course, will fit in less that distance :) ). Or, make a loop with your fingers, using your pointer and the thumb, place it slightly further from your eye then what the focal length of your lens is (it all depends on the size of your fingers ;D) and that will roughly give you what you will be able to capture. So, again, it all depends on how far from the subject you are and what would you like to take a pic of (just one person or the whole action). Also, remember, the longer the lens, the faster you have to take your pics which becomes really difficult in sports where you have a lots of movement. Also, from my experience with 300m on a film camera, your field of view becomes so small that tracking the overall situation on the field becomes difficult.

Jorge, if you are reading this, chime in your 2c :) (he used to be a professional sports photographer)

I bought the D40x I love it. takes great pics. started experimenting with different setting already having fun. now I have to figure out how to post.
