Camera suggestions??

I am looking into buying a DSLR but I dont know what to get. I have a Canon SD630 currently, so I dont know if I should pick up a used DSLR and get the hang of it before I drop a lot of money on brand new or just get new and learn as I go

A great starter camera is a a canon XTi or an XSi. Go with the body only and grab a great lens, the lens that comes with it makes a good paper weight.

You could really go either way. There are a lot of good used DSLRs on the market. I think it depends on how much you have to sink into the camera/lens package. You could easily get a used DSLR (D40/D80) or a new DSLR (D60/D90) with an all around lens (18-200) to get you started and pick up a macro later.

I have a friend looking to upgrade his camera so he is selling his canon 30D. It has about 1500 pics taken on it and is around a year old. Comes with everything it originally came with plus a tamron macro lens 18-35 and a sigma telephoto lens 75-300. For $500. Good deal?

The 18-35 is probably a "kit" quality lens (hence the reason he's dumping it in favor of "better" glass, but since you're not buying it new, you won't lose any money on it). The Tamron Macro is well enough respected as is the Sigma telephoto. Not a bad deal if you're looking to invest in Canon. Is your friend staying with Canon? If so what is replacing these lenses with in the upgrade? If he's looking to get out of Canon you should find out why.

I know NOTHING about the Canon 30D so I can't tell you if that particular camera is worth the 350$ (after lenses) or not. It would be a good place to start.

Best advice is to hold the cameras you're considering in your hands as they will have completely different ergonomics and one might be much preferred to the other. Once you buy into a system you're not going to want to change as the body becomes the cheapest (and replaceable) part of your camera system and the lenses will be the part you generally don't want to replace.

well I shouldnt say friend since I have only met him once. He is a member of a bmw forum I belong to. I bought a TV from him a few months back. He is the type to have good electronics, and dump them when something better comes along. I rely benefitted with the TV so I figured I woudl with the camera also. I dont know what he is looking to get next. When I got the tv from him it was 4 months old and he needed money for rent. I have a feeling its the same situation but maybe he is a little embarrased to say so. Living out of his means maybe? Either way I though it was a good deal for a camera that is fairly new and something that would be good for me to start with.

Lots of Canon guys on the RC Photog forum. You're probably right about it being a good deal. You could double check there for some good advice.

I got the same Cam Jsantoli, But with the normal kit lens, i need to pickup the 55-200 and i think i should be set. I dunno tho.
