Can I add clowns to my tank with a clown in now?

I was wondering if I could take a shot at this: I have a nice pair of Clarkii's that have been living in my sump for a few months. I got them figuring I could get my maroon out. Well of course that didn't happen. I had two RBTA's that my maroon hung out in, but I got rid of them today. Do you think that with the nem's out of the tank, I could try to put the pair of Clarkii's in the tank and there will be no death's?

That is riskey but here is how you can tell......... Get a specimin container and drill some holes in it and hang it on the side of the tank with the new fish in. See if the maroon goes after it like crazy. I just did this and got 5 wrasses in my tank without any fights.

Mixing clowns has no sure-fire trick or 100% answer. Some people have loads of luck, and other people experience nothing but failure.

However, more to the point with your clowns, you have two species known for being larger growing and more aggressive clowns. I'd steer clear of attempting to mix them, if I were you. This clowns are generally boisterous little guys and filled with personality (this, by the way, is a polite way of saying "royal jerks"). It could work, but the chances are about 50/50. So, if you really love one species or the other of your clowns, I wouldn't attempt it.

Have you tried DIY fish traps to get your maroon out?

While 5 wrasses might work for Sam... that's a 180. I wouldn't be so inclined with the fish that you have and a 90g tank. I'd pull the maroon. Mine would be an easy catch. She loves to eat and if I left the net in for 30m before feeding time she wouldn't even notice it when I put my hands in the tank with food.

It's tough for some and easier for others. I've had good luck doing this. In my tank I have 2 true percs, 2 osc percs, 2 larger clarkiis and 2 yellow striped maroons. They were added in that order. I had the 1st 3 pairs in a 120g and then in a 44g and now in a 265g. I added the maroons to the 265.

What I did was capture the clarkiis from the tank doing basically what Phyl mentioned (net/feeding) and put them in a 10g tank with the maroons so I could view them. Once the initial aggression wore off I added a single piece of PVC pipe with the one larger clarkii "taking over". This again caused a little bit of aggression because he didn't want the maroons near it. After adding a few other PVC pipes the aggression was gone as they all had their own spot in the tank.

When I added them back to the tank I did it with lights out and put the maroons in first followed by the clarkiis the next day at lights out. Things have been good since.

PS If things didn't work out I did have another tank I could have put one pair in.
