Car audio help

Niice corolla....

Anyway, i had a 4channel amp put in today and i DOUBT that they wired it correctly. First off, the headunit's Fade and balance are completely messed up. Left goes left, right doesnt do anything.... Balance forward does nothing whilst rear makes the speakers go out completely.

When centered and running, the front right 6 1/2 speaker is thumping somethign awful, like its being hit with a screwdriver. I cant tell if its blown or anything (wasnt before i had them install the amp) because i cant isolate the speaker and i dont know in particular how to get the door off.

I asked the guy at the shop and he, in very bad english, i think told me that the amp cant divert the sound to one side or another somethin somethin the low bass cant be filtered by the speaker and maybe its too powerful. He offered to try to mess with the wires tomorrow, so im going to go through with that... but if it doesnt work im gonna go for my money back and get one installed at a different shop.

Any thoughts as to what may be wrong? maybe wires going to the wrong spot etc..?

1. what kind of head unit? factory or after market?

2. how is the amplifier connected? are there 4 RCA type terminals hooked up to it right now, or only two?

From what it sounds like, only one side of the RCA jacks are being utilized. The awful sound is, yes indeed, a blown speaker, or a bottomed out woofer which cant handle low frequencies. You can get bass blockers at BB or CC, otherwise, I believe crutchfield sells them as well.

could you give me finer details?

head unit is the gt410u from sony... i think thats the product name... Aftermarket single din

Amp has 2 sets of Red/white RCA cables in the back... checked the connections, and their plugged in fine.

i know kicker will replace my speakers, i have a warranty still, so im not too worried about that, just wanna know wtf is wrong with the amp.

Amp is a 600.4 sony xplod amp. Prolly shoulda just spent the extra hundred and got the kicker 250.4 but damn college student bank account told me to be cheap :( this is what i get

thats the head unit so if it says so then yes. again, i didnt install... got em when i jsut got the car and my license so i didnt know much about installing. its a lil late to go check now but i am 99% sure there were 2 sets of red and white wires hooked up to the back of the amp next to all the speaker wires connected.

if your amplifier has 2 pairs of jacks connected which is the correct amount, and your headunit only has 1 pair of outputs, then the line is probably split out so that your one pair becomes two pairs. Which ultimately means that by fading either left, you get the front speakers working, and by fading right, you either get the rear or nothing at all.

I'm gonna have to pull some algae from my tank, the hair algae is encroaching one of the corals, and i've just about had it, so i'll be back in about 30 minutes- was waiting for the water to mix...

just posted right before me.

if that is correct, then the guy who installed it used some kind of line splitter, like a Y-splitter, that could be either loose, or worse, "rigged" lol (I've had my fair shares of those myself)

No problem. If you dont see me online dont worry bout it. after class tomorrow im going to get them to fix it or my moneys back.

Keep kicking myself. shoulda went to the same shop i got the head unit and speakers >.<

also, check to see that no speaker wires cross each other coming OUT of the amplifier. If you have 4 speakers in the car, and they worked before, see to make sure that no copper strands cross on the amp terminals. that will cause them not to play, worse still overwork the amp.

Thanks!

Cars... still?
Kind of, but I kinda grew up too :D

I still consider myself an enthusiast. But my days of fiberglass and paint and car stereos are shortened now since I can't do bodywork in front of my condo, and I'm getting old (did I mention old again). I do some stuff from time to time at my friend's garage, the one who owned that Supra, but they have a new baby and babies and resin fumes don't mix!

Since the speaker was working perfectly fine, and under 5 months old, before i took it to the shop... do you think they would replace it? or pay for it? i mean, driving in it was fine, showing the guy my setup it was fine, but i guess after they tested it out in the back, it blew out... i told the guy right away, before i left, so they cant blame me right?

it may not be blown. some speakers handle low frequencies well, others not. The sony amplifier should have dB settings for how much bass you want on the speakers. If you play with the settings a little, you will be able to control the bass going to them so they won't be popping. A blown speaker will sound like there is a piece of paper laying in front of the speaker itself, it is a very raspy sound.

If the guys who installed your equipment didn't do it right, I doubt they will replace the speaker for you, but I think you should check the settings, get familiarized with the amplifier and your system, but most of all, get them all to work first! replacing speakers is a snap compared to installing an amplifier.

Just saw this thread, I have installed all of my own stereo stuff in my cars forever and I always have an amp and sub in my cap. You've been getting good advice, I am just curious what shop you are referring to that installed it. My friend owns a shop that does great work if the guy you went to doesnt make the situation right. PM if you want the shops info
