Sure. Your tangs & other herbivores might eat it before it can grow, and you'll want to keep it from getting out of hand (though as a slow grower it probably won't be difficult).
 
While you can do it, I wouldn't since you probably won't gain anything from it. The reason to use Cheato (or other macro algae) is to consume nitrates & phosphates and then to be able to export it from the system by discarding part of the macro.

If the fish are eating it then the nitrates and phosphates are being recycled in the tank and you aren't exporting anything.

It's also not the healthiest thing for fish to eat either.
