I got a tennis ball size of chaeto about a year ago.
It has bee in my sump with 310 W of T5 lightning.
It has not grown at all. Can anyone explaint to me why it grow at all?
Does anyone have some near 07928 that I can try to se if I got a "bad batch"?
The other contributing factor could be lights. T5’s on a sump…do you have corals in your sump? What bulbs are you running. Generally speaking, the lower the temperature (k value) the more usable light for algae. If you want that stuff to grow (and want to stick with T5’s) throw in 6500K bulbs. OR, just pick up a cheap utility light from Home Depot and slap in a 100 – 150W equivalent compact fluorescent full spectrum or plant spectrum bulb.
I have the same problem too. Will from AO suggested to extend the lighting period. I did. I use one of those energy saver flood light. The chaeto lasts somewhat longer when the lighting period is extended, but still breaks away after some time.
Someone else suggested to use Iron supplement in the fuge to help grow the Chaeto. That one didn't help either.
my setup has the "shoplight" type setup you can buy at sears,HD,loews pretty cheap, the clamp on witha standard 40 wt light bulb,I run it all the time and the cheato grows like crazy, and I too have nitrates at around 20,but I also add iron every now and again.
Cheato is best with a bulb in the 6500-6900 range. I actually use a flood type light.
Next flow is good for cheato...so if you just have it in the side and no flow probably not going to grow as well.
Little iodine gives it a nice green color, I don't add iron at all, noticed that when I started dosing.
Your bulbs are nice for corals but not so great for cheato. Maybe add in one GE 6500 bulb in place of the 10K bulb. As Mott pointed out to me has better par and about the same color so you will perhaps get better growth on your corals too.
