Chillers

I'm fairly new to the hobby and want to know if most people have chillers. I didn't use one last summer but did notice a slight fluctuation in temperature. I have a 75 gal. with a couple of frags, Damsels, Cromis, lobster & crabs, clown fish and an anemone. Any opinions?

Hi Darrin,

How "slight" was the temperature swing and what temperature are you currently keeping your tank at?

If say you are running @ 80 degrees normally and in the summer you are at 82 That would be fine and you wouldn't need a chiller. I think anything over 84 may require the use of a chiller.

You can always use a fan to blow across the top of your water (on your tank or sump). That will increase your evaporation and help to cool the tank.

Last year when the temperatures (a Newbie Reefer's first summer) shot up to over 95 degrees, I paid dearly. This year I am hoping to use fans (& an AC Jr) to keep the temperatures in control.

I use one on my SPS tank. Corals are doing much better not having a temp. swing.
