cleaning reactor

I guess I should've asked for a little more detail how long was it running before cleaning. I wasn't sure if cleaning would be start the whole bacterial process over that's why I'm asking

In my case, the reactor had been running for about 4 months, I just removed the insert and placed it in some tank water while I cleaned the housing. Then I lifted the insert far enough out of the water to clean the slots at the bottom, that had become covered with a hard crust. I would do whatever I could to keep the bio-pellets that were in use, since they have already been colonized.

Yeah I opened my reactor the other day to add bio pallets and noticed some gunky stuff. Figured it might just be the bacteria so I wasn't sure. It's probably been running about 4 months also. Thanks for the answers.

i've only been running mine for a month - haven't noticed any need to clean it yet. I'm using an octopus reactor.

So does anyone have a clue as to what kind of reactor this is? It has no writing on it whatsoever and I dont remember TLFS giving a name when I bought it. It works great so I'd like to know it's name. I also have a BRS type reactor. I bought the old style insert for it from BRS and am currently running GFO in it with a 1200 MJ. The flow seems to slow down like the insert is clogged. I noticed the same thing happening when I was running carbon in it. Is that a normal thing for that type of reactor?
