Cleaning sump

I noticed much dirt in sump and want to clean it out. Last time I drained the sump and used paper towels and a small toy shovel to get the dirt out. I know have a bucket topper wet vac and am wondering if I can use it to vacuum out the dirt. There is a sponge pad on the wet vac so do I leave that on or remove it? Any suggestion appreciated.

Leave it on. When you are wet-vaccing, the sponge keeps debris out of the motor parts. When you get done vacuuming out the sump, take the sponge filter off and rinse it off with fresh water.

Sid, they are felt but they are old so some don't last as long and the water overflows out into the sump. I try to keep up changing the socks as I have 8. Even bleach cleaning in the washer doesn't help the bad ones.

When you use a wet vac you remove the filter. The filter is for when you vac dirt, dust and dry stuff so it does not blow through the exhaust hole back into the air.

Joe, According to the instructions this sponge stays on for wet vac. Then it says to take it off and use some bag it came with for dry vac.
