Closed Loop Pump Recommendations? SCWD?

Hey all!

Sorry for all the questions about water flow lately!

My next questions is regarding a closed loop.

I am looking at a 60g hex (27" x 24" x 28") and I would like 1800-2400 gph water flow. This will be a FOWLR, so that may even be more flow than necessary.

ANYWAY...I am considering a NON-drilled closed loop.

Intake will be 2" PVC with a strainer, elbow over rim of tank to pump and return over rim of tank to loc line returns.

I am looking for suggestions on a nice closed loop pump that can be run externally. Quiet and low heat are biggies, watts used not so much.

Also...considering even LESS flow (<1500 gph) and using a SCWD. Any thoughts on that?

Personally I didn't like the SCWD. I think it restricts flow too much and I don't think it is supposed to work well over 900gph. We took ours off of our 65.

Another option (possibly the easiest) would be to use a 1" seaswirl.

I would have a 1" PVC intake running to a pump (Gen-X Mak 4 or similar PanWorld pump) and then back up to the sea swirl

This would give me great water movement...I could add a locline Y to the outlet...and around 1100gph (almost 20x turnover)

Again, FOWLR/softie reef.

Thoughts?

Thanks for the insight. I have heard good and bad.

What about the seaswirl?

Anyone using one?

The SCWD is OK but it does rob you of a lot of flow to do the alternating currents. If you like the idea behind the SCWD then check out Ocean Motions devices.Same principle but it uses a motor to do the switching and you can get them with different output returns (ie. 2, 4, 8 ).

The Sea Swirl and Wavy Sea devices are different and actually a lot better choices for most people then the SCWD. These both work roughly the same but the Wavy Sea is made better, cost more and has more options.

I'm thinking of using a combination of the Ocean Motion and the Wavy Sea devices on my 265 on the closed loop.

I can show you each of these devices on Saturday when you come over.
