Comparison: HOB vs Sump

I had to just vent/rant what have you. When I started this hobby I had a 55g with all HOB equipment and it was bad and then found this club. Shortly after I upgraded to 75g RR. The sump was small so no room for a fuge so I kept using the HOB fuge and the tank did well. I then obtained a bigger sump and moved the fuge to sump chamber and got rid of the HOB one. Few months later had all kinds of algae issue and added 2 reactors for carbon and GFO. Things settled down and tank did great.

Now I have the same issue. Why did my tank do well with HOB equipment but as soon as I get a sump it goes downhill. Is it just me or am I really doing something wrong withing the sump setup.

Thanks for letting me get that out. :grief:

your HOB fuge was established and was running efficiently. when you shut it down and moved to the bigger sump. the new fuge, even if you were using stuff from the HOB needed to establish itself, in the meantime nuisance algae overtook what your new fuge couldn't handle.

Still even after the move it was up and running for almost a year and still had issues.

Some things you might never figure out. Some things work for one person but not good for another 100 people. Do what was working for you. Go back to your HOB stuff for a few months and see if thats what your sweet spot was.

did you up your husbandry to make up for the fuge? you gotta remember, you have to give the fuge a chance to establish itself. you gotta make up for what it can't do anymore.

Just find it odd. Plus the clean look is nice. Will add a small HOB fug e and see how it goes.

My previous established sump/fuges did wonders, but took months to kick in.
When I picked the HOB up from you a few months ago I've had 2 major diatom outbreaks, one so bad I had to treat with Chempure, yet I added nothing to the fuge outside of established rock from the tank, some cheato from the previous HOB fuge, and additional water.
Still not 100% stable, but getting there. Don't understand myself. A minor change in equipment with no real change in internal elements seems to set off a drastic accomodation. Maybe this always happens in the oceans with no concern but in our micro-micro-ubermicroscopic tanks it means a lot more.

Sorry to hear about that Mark_C. At least I'm not the only one that has this issue.
Hope I don't have a major algae bloom while I'm away with fuge running.
Only time will tell.
