Computer help needed

My son has an older Toshiba laptop, probably 5 or 6 years old easily. When the computer turns on it displays Toshiba and then displays Preparing Automatic Repair. Shortly after the screen goes blank. I have left it plugged in overnight and nothing. I can't seem to get into setup mode as I assume the system software is corrupt. Anyone have any ideas how to fix it?

Thanks

Please do try these troubleshooting steps that may help in solving the issue.
- Start by doing a hard reboot, remove the battery and Ac adapter then press and hold the power button for 20 seconds and see if it will boot up normally.
- If these will not work try loading it in Safe Mode, while the laptop is booting up repeatedly press on F8 until it loads Advanced Boot Options and select Safe Mode.
- If it will load Safe Mode run System Restore, restore it back to an earlier date or time before the problem even happened.
- If it doesn't load Safe Mode the last resort would be to do a clean install of Windows.

It is Windows 7. I tried all those steps with no luck.
Wasn't sure if it was Windows or the OS.
Guess I need to get a copy of Windows as it was preinstalled with no disks and never backed it up.

Thanks

Okay. So the PC displayed the same message as before about auto recover and just sitting there with a blank screen. Does this mean HD is bad?

Press the "F8" key several times while the laptop boots, until you see theWindows Advanced Options screen. 4. Use the cursor keys to navigate, pressing "Up" or "Down" to select theSafe Mode option. If booting and hitting f8 has no response let me know.

Fix #1: Boot into Safe Mode
  1. Insert the disc and reboot the system.
  2. Press any key to boot from the DVD.
  3. Choose your keyboard layout.
  4. Click Repair your computer at the Install now screen.
  5. Click Troubleshoot.
  6. Click Advanced options.
  7. Click Startup Settings.
  8. Click Restart.
but if you cannot get a disk im sure i could run over tomorrow
