Convert tank from FOWLR to Reef

Hello everyone, I'm a first time poster in this group. Here's my story. I purchased this 220G tank for my living room, I wanted to upgrade my 150G reef tank for a larger display. Unfortunately, my wife wasn't fully on board after noticing the enormous difference in size. Today, the 220G is sitting in my sunroom looking for a new home. I have a second 220G tank in the basement, my FOWLR. For months, I wanted to remove the basement tank because the display height is only 18 in but the fish enjoy the length at 8ft x 3ft. Initially, the plan was to relocate the tank in the sunroom (72 x 24 x 30) to the basement, but the tank's total height with stand is too tall at 6 ft for me to work like cleaning or scaping or sensible filtration. The logistics don't work. On Monday, I have to rehome an Eel, Picasso Trigger and Formosa Wrasse. My LFS suggested I bring the fish for store credit. If I'm long-winded, I'm wrote this at 4 AM. Any recommendations regarding filtration, corals, fish, and inverts?

It sounds like you are keeping the long tank in the basement and just converting it over to a reef tank. Usually the biggest difference in FOWLR to reef it lighting, so what is your plan for lighting the reef tank? Skimmer is common for both systems so that is not an issue for you. The next big thing you will have to think about is water chemistry for corals, how are you going to maintain it? Are you going to go with a dosing type system or a calcium reactor or potentially both?

Thank you for the questions. I'm going to keep the longer tank. I purchased 3 echo tech radions for the lights, I hope the spread will cover the length of the tank. I dosed with my previous tank but didn't use a calcium reactor, I only housed softies. I want to incorporate clams so I may need it. What is your experience with chaeto? I used it my FOWLR but it doesn't spin. How can I make it spin?

Chaeto spinning in a sump is achieved through using a powerhead to force water around the chaeto, so as it grows, it grows into a condensed ball.
Welcome to the group! I see you have a lot of nice fish in there, are they all deemed to be reef safe (won't eat/nip at corals)?

Agree with the last statement of fish and corals. I picked up 2 Acans and my Fiji puffer likes the taste of them unfortunately.

Given the shallowness of the tank, I think you are good with your lights, you may just have to adjust the placement of the corals and rocks, like build the rock under the lights for the sps and place the lower light corals around the edges. With that size tank, you have a lot of options. As the above mentioned, chaeto is all about the sump setup and how you do that. You might want to look at an algae reactor as those seem to be a bit more controllable.
