Coral Placements

Well I've had the tank going for awhile now and am looking to move all the corals to their final homes. I have a couple questions.
  1. How high up should I put my ultra acan in the tank? Currently its on the sand bed but I want to get it up on a rock so I can stop blowing off all the sand my scooter blenny keeps putting in it.
  2. In terms of corals overtaking others, who would win? GSP or Z+P's.
  3. Can most Z's +P's be put on the same rock and coexist?
Thank you in advance.

If you like the colors of your Acan I would keep it low in the tank. When I moved mine up higher the colors changed on me. Not really a bad thing but they did change.

GSP would definitely over run Zs and Ps

Zs are usually OK with Zs and Ps are usually ok with Ps. I would try not to mix them. My Ps grow much faster than my Zs and they would over run them eventually. It also helps to start with colonies that are about the same size. Colonies with more polyps may over take 1 or 2 poolyp colonies.

Thanks Jonathan! Really appreciate it.

Out of everything the Acans are doing the best so I'll let them be. Maybe Ill just get a small rock to put under it so it can expand onto something. As of now its growing off the plug and just hanging on the sand.

The GSP, damn thats going to be a tough thing to place. Love the color it brings but I know its a weed that will overtake just about anything!

Also looking around and doing some research Im getting tons of conflicting information on the difference between palys and zoas.

From what I understand zoas are typically smaller and grow in carpets with a round mouth while palys are taller, bigger, with a hole instead of a slit. Is there anything else?

Also it seems I mostly see zoas that are cool/colorful. Are zoas generally more colorful/interesting than palys?

Currently I have some orange people eaters and from looking at them it would appear they are palys, is this a good classification?

Pretty sure the PPE's are palys.

For me, palys get bigger. They also have different tentacles from what I see too. My zoos have slender tentacles while my palys are thicker. The way it looks to me is like Play-Do. Everything I just said may be wrong, just my observations. My palys also eat while none of my zoos ever do.

As far as what's more colorful, it's hard to beat either one. My Tequila Sunrise are awesome, probably my favorite zoo. Palys, I have a few that are awesome. Red Devil PPE, Raja, Space Monster, Darth Maul, Sunny D just to name a few. I like my palys better.

Oh yeah, as far as GSP. Why not try mounting it to the rear glass? I've seen people do that and it looks awesome. As long as no rock touches the glass it shouldn't really spread either.

With the acans I know they grown better on rock.. maybe add a small flat rock to the sand bed and place the acan on it.. that might help with the sand getting in it too

1. Keep the acan down low, the higher the light they will just morph to one color (red or orange) and lose all the cool color
2. GSP with win over zoas and just about everything else, as John said keep it in an area that it can't thread.
3. Zoas can grow together but at some point one will take over the other one.

PPE are zoanthid gigantus, not palys. Almost every named zoa out there is a zoa. True palys would be nuclear greens, purple deats, captain americas. Everyone calls them palys (myself included) but the more you know and what not.

Thank you for the replies everyone.

John, The more I look into GSP the more I want to give it away lol. If anything your idea is the best. Atleast there I could cut it off the glass If I need to.

Sid, I just saw a couple nice thin pieces of rock. Looks like Im going to have to go back and pick them up.

Mike, Would about 12" off the sand be too high with a 4 bulb t-5 in the 72 bow? Also thanks for the information on the zoas. Im trying to get everything in its own little spot. Right now its definatly a little bit of mixed madness going on!

Hmmm. didn't know that Mike. I guess the only Paly I have would be my Palythoa Grandis. They're Plays right?

John Yes those would be true palys.

Artie, what we do is put them on a piece of rubble (like codfather said) then you can move them up and see.

Yea AJ those gsp can overtake everything for sure.I like em too and keep them on my sandbed.Ive also had it on my back glass and just scraped it back with a razorblade to keep it in check.I also have some pink encrusting stars(same as greenstars only pink) that is on my center overflow, which at times I regret doing cause the maint involved to keep it in check is a Pita

GSP will win against just about everything. I did have them on a lot of my rock and it eventually died off :) I did like it when most of my back glass was covered in it. It did need occasional maintenance of clearing the overflow teeth because it over grew there sometimes, but it was easy. I would definitely suggest that if you want GSP I think glass is the way to go. Sand is ok too, but I like to keep that open for moving things around like new frags or colonies.

IT seems most people like GSP in the beggining but in the end it turns into a maintenance nightmare. Maybe Ill just give the gSP away and pick up some zoas and palys to fill in the space.

I agree wit all ya. The gsp on the back or side glass is the way to go. U could also put it on a rock thats easy to get out . Then u could always remove it before it grows off the rock and onto others. Cut a frag off , put it on a different rock n start over. Gsp is a love/hate. It is a nice bright green, and sways nice wit the current.
