Couple Questions

First one:
How much electricity do pumps and lights consume? My December bill was a little over $100 more than usual. I know I had Xmas lights on two trees and decorations outside. I have the following on my tank:
a- Return pump 600 gallons per hour, brand unknown
b- Koriala 3
c- Mag 5 on a Berlin skimmer
d- Small Aqauclear powerhead 402, I think no label
e- Flourescent light over sump, the one that fits on a 10 gallon
f- Tank lights, 2 VHO and 2 MH 175 watts

Second one:
In previous threads was having problems with leathers and zoas not opening. I also have and still have problems with cheato. No matter how much I put in it seems to disappear. I acquired a Sun Coral and have been feeding it during the day so it opens and closes at night. What I have noticed is that the leathers and zoas seem to respond from this feeding. I did some searches on the web and seems my water may be to clean. The few articles swayed that way as to why the cheato isn't growing, zoas and leathers aren't growing. I am very anal about feeding the corals and fish to ensure minimal amount of food decaying in the tank. I target feed the corals about once or twice a week and feed the fish daily but sparingly. I was considering feeding the corals every other day but am worried about water quality degradation. I change 10% of the water every 2 weeks. Just wondering what people think?

lets see...i do hope someone double checks my figures...

220 watts of vho
325 watts of mh
100 (or so) watts for everything else mentioned
645 total. Figure you run them 8 hrs a day.

.645 khw/h times 8 hrs = 5.16 khw/h per day. A monthly electrical bill is 30 days - so your lights are costing you an extra 154.8 watts per month. Lets round up the charge to 10 cents per khw - and you are spending an extra $16 a month.

Unless you have more equipment running (lights on longer) - I'm not sure the tank is the main culprit. Didn't you a new Wii? I bet the kids are playing while you are sleeping/working every day!!!! ;)

Anyways - we should move to kentucky and then not worry about electricity.

messed up - the 100 watts mentioned above would be run 24hrs - not the 8mentioned...so .1 kwh times another 16 hrs = 1.6 khw times 30 days = 48 watts more per month. So overall you are being billed for another 200 watts per month. That'd be about $20.

I say ask the kids! ;)

In addition to the fact that pumps run 24 hours a day, which has already been pointed out, for lighting you also need to consider the types of ballasts in use.

A coil and core ballast is usually only about 65% efficient. So if you are using 325 watts of MH lighting, and using coil can core ballasts, you can figure it's actually drawing closer to 500w. If you are using electronic ballasts, they are about 90% efficient. For 325w of MH on electronic ballasts you are drawing about about 360 watts.

The same thing applies to fluorescent ballasts, except some really cheep normal output ballasts can be really bad.

Of course to get an exact number you need to actually measure the current consumed.

JCP&L has had 4 increases in the past 2 years and they were just approved for another increase. I just had a company out last Friday about installing solar energy, now I'm just waiting on the estimate.

If you don't faint after you get the estimate, let us know what it looks like! I've always been interested (obviously), but I don't think that our house faces the right way.

I cant even imagine your electric bill!! I am wondering If I will see a decrease in mine with my solaris..

He told us roughly $47K and that NJ just redid the rebates (which weren't that good  ) I'll let you know when I get the break down.
