Daily Temp Flux

What is the norm as far as tamp fluxuation throughout a day. my tank goes from about 77 to 80 while the MH's are on. is this ok? i am going to be adding more fans. i have a window fan suspened right behind the tank that comes on when the MH comes on. i can open the window in the room behind the tank to keep it cooler in there, but that will only work till the weather breaks. i am considering getting a chiller. it may be worth it just for the peace of mind!

Do you have central air? If so it will make a huge difference as to wether or not fans alone will work for you.

My office tank, a 120, gets too hot without a chiller even with my window AC blasting 24/7.

During the winter, I experience about the same temp swing you are reporting.

Yes that is fine....some natural reefs swing up to 5-10 degrees during a day.

thanks guys! i do have central air, but not in the basement where the tank is!!! and for some reason it does get hot in the basement in the summer, even though most basements stay cool. maybe it gets hot b/c of all the equipment from the fish tank, the pc, the 2 tv's, fridge, washer & dryer, and all the other stuff i have in this basement! i guess i will just continue to monitor closely as the weather changes (hopefully soon).

I do not know if you can but in my basement I cut a Hole in my duct work for my Heating and AC and put a register in so I now have Heat and AC in the basement

Jason

thought about that, but its just not workable. i already have baseboard heaters down there, it is a finished basement with a bar. i have a portable AC unit that i use down there, but it really does not do all that much. i think it is b/c there is no insulation behind the paneling on the walls

A temp swing of 3-4 is better for coral than keeping a tank at a stedy temp, my tank runs 78-81, as long as your temp doesn't reach 85 or higher I wouldn't worry about it

When it starts to get warmer keep a eye on the tank, if your temp gets to 84 one thing you can do is shut off your MH's, also if you get a dual temp controller you can set a heater for the temp you want and use the other plug for a fan, you can set it to turn on say when your tank reaches 83 or so. Some people use ACjr's to do this and also control the MH's to turn on and off. :)
