Drying out Bryopsis?

I have a dilemma....before the tank leak I had a really bad case of bryopsis. I was going to bleach the rock before using it again, but now that I've lost two fish, I'm afraid I'm out of time and need to get the new tank running asap.

So my question is...if my rock has been dried in the sun for a week and continued drying in the garage for an additional 2-3 weeks...is that enough to have killed the bryopsis without going through another week and a half to bleach it?

Also...what about the sand? That had bryopsis too. Can I just clean that in fresh water and it be ok to use again?

I definitely don't want this devil algae to come back but I don't want to lose all my fish either!!!

That's a tough pest! It will come back without proper irradication.

As for the sand I've only reused all the sand once after a move and I was not happy afterwards.

I'd go new sand with some well rinsed existing sand to seed the new. It will likely seed the bryopsis as well.

+1 Totally agree. We have had this discussion about the bryopsis with you. LOL. Do you want to risk it coming back again????

Darren....I know we did lol.

I'm just under crunch time now. Fish dying....temporary tank looking terrible. I don't know what to do and am ready to sell everything.

Just a thought here, but is new rock an option. Since the rock you have is basically dead rock now anyway. Reef Rock can be had pretty cheap from either the company itself and I think Ultracorals still sells it. Its pretty nice stuff.

bryopsis is bad no question but I really think if you plucked down enough $$$ on a few gallons of Kent Tech M and maintained that artificially high amt of mag, you should be ok.

For the record I had a bad case of bryopsis and was manually pulling it (along with my hair on my head). A steady dose of tech M (over teh course of several months) did it. I still found a sliver of bryopsis growing on my locline (of all places).

Anyways - you can do it. Ideally i would follow the instructions as laid out by the others on this thread, but if you have to bypass those safeguards, then spend the money on tech M.

With the torture you put that rock through already I don't think you will have a problem honestly. ReefRocks is cheap but why bother when you have rock already. If the Rock is dry a good power washing will do wonders. Likewise artifically raising your magnesium during the cycling process wont hurt anything and will ensure that it never has a chance to take hold in the first place.

If you need Magnesium purchasing the bulk stuff off BRS works or BigAl's online for the TechM Stuff. ( I still have 2 Gallons of that stuff.) Run your tank Dark for the cycle. The sand if its still live is more likely to bring on the bad with having spores in it. I suggest Cleaning it up drying it off and using it to fill in gaps in the foundation around your house. Pick up 1 or 2 bags of tropic eden reef-flakes and you should be good to go.

If you MUST beach the rocks then do it using the reccomended amount of bleach. I know that if you overdose on some stuff that neutralizes chlorine in water it will work on the rocks too. I use it on my filter socks that I wash in chlorine. I wash about my filtersocks like that and use the chlorine stuff to neutralize it.

Tri I recommended him the patent Oliver method which did WONDERS for my rocks.

Steve at this point you really need to bleach it and get going on it, if you want I'll hold your fish I have the 20g setup or my sump or main tank let me know.

I have plenty of reef rock. pm me if interested in getting that tank going. where are you located? I can get it to you asap.. the high mag using tech m works wonders on bryopsis..
