so did anyone loose power? We lost it around 2 AM and it’s still out. My anemones we’re all stressed out due to the salt mix having too much alkalinity. Hope they survive the cold water

Diana. I just can’t get past your salt being off so bad it killed your stuff. I mean is this common. Sounds like a liability issue. Do I need to test my fresh salt for water changes to confirm what I purchased is what I got. My head is spinning with questions. I just never even considered that as an issue

Diana, I understand the temp issue but not the salt. What happened?

I had purchased (2) 200g boxes of IO from our group buy. No problem with the first box. The second box 2 bags ok. Third bag was mixed with fresh rodi Thursday. My stupid ass used the refractor on water in the Brute 1.025 but didnt check Alk etc. Then trouble happened. Off the chart Alk was found Saturday morning in tank and in the Brute. Salinity, MG and Ca were normal. Checked it three times using Red Sea Pro Alk test Kit. Two syringes of alkalinity pro titrations and no reaction in color change. Same thing happened with the 4th bag from the 200g box. I had to run to petco in an emergency to get a bucket of IO salt. The Parameters of the IO salt from petco were all in normal range. I could have driven AAC for Red Sea salt but it would have cost me 35 minutes each way to pickup. So there is a small chance parameters could be off in a box/bucket. I never thought it could be off so much. I was stupid and didn’t check the new bag in the 200g box. Lesson learned the hard way. As long as everyone is healthy and happy...then life is good. Appreciate those days!

I still have no power at the house. Question about the SPS that encrusted onto the live rock that is now white/dead: I pulled most of SPS off but do I have to scrape what encrusted off the live rock?

This is the worse story I have ever read. There are not words that express how upset I am about your situation. How is it possible alk was so far off. What’s the lesson here. Don’t by IO. Or completely test all salt from all brands??? Has this ever happened to anyone else???

Wow, I'm sorry to hear that. I've actually never tested new salt for alk levels. Maybe moving to an automated, continuous water change set up could help avoid this. Since it's such small amounts of water changed at any one time, you won't see this issue. I do on occasion have to adjust my 2 part up or down a little. I always assumed it was due to the coral demand, but I wonder if this is part of it also.

I have always checked parameters on a new bucket. I just didn’t think to check each bag from the same box. I just thought if the first bag from a box was good then the other bags in the box came from the same batch.

I am just going with the flow. I am sad to have lost my corals. The only coral I am really sad to loose is my graf bonsi. I had it for almost a year. It started to grow rapidly since Christmas. It was about 5 inches high with many branches and encrusted on the live rock. Looking forward to working on my sump. I have an extra 40b in the house and I will have the baffles on Thursday.

wow so basically you bought a box of IO salt and mixed it and added to your tank and the salt had too much alk levels?

Wow. So sorry to hear that Diana.
I know etch salt is different regarding parameters but each bag in the same box never.
Write to the company and complain as there has to be an issue on their side somewhere.

When I move my tank over will probably have some frags from the move. Yeah, no matter how I try to be gentle I break stuff.

Good luck and hope it works out.

We did lose power but was told they are turning off electric from midnight to 5am/6am for repairs.
I plan to use the battery air pump for air exchange and cover tank with blankets to retain as much heat.

47948189-9B04-4D47-BB7F-D1BEDFA99390.jpeg So this is the only coral left in the tank. The stalk are white and I think I see polyp bailout. Don’t expect this one to survive. Will know more when the power comes back on

@diana a How high did your alk go? It must have been really high. When I had my 2 part incident, I got as high as 17dkh without losses. I realized within a few hours, and was able to get it down to 12ish I think before I left it alone to fall naturally.

Could there have been something else in the mix that caused the issue?

Just scooped these small ones out. Still hopeful on the big colony
