Extension tubes

I've used them before. They're cool. There's no glass in them, so it hardly matters which one you get... though some of them may talk to your camera better than others. I'd start with the Nikon one and see if the others are any different from what the Nikon ones provide.

I play around with them. Brand doesn't matter, like Phyl said, theres no glass.
It's amazing what you can see thru them.

if you have nikon camera, best of all off course, nikon brand. However, there are other companies out there that make equivalent quality and compatibility with your camera such as Tokina, Sigma, Tamron. there is a cheaper version that will do the job like Kenko. If you are buying the extension tube to take picture of your tank alone, you need to consider of working distance due to macro factor of the tube in relation to your lens focal length. Also you will lost 1 or 2 stops. I, myself, do have extension tube but I rather use a true 1:1 macro lens. Tamron 90mm Macro, Sigma 150mm Macro, Nikon 105mm macro VR they are all good but tamron 90mm macro is the slowest in autofocusing lens.

well, that's the thing. I would love to get a Nikon branded one since I know its OEM, but there's no optics, so getting a third party would make sense. I didn't know you lose as much as two stops, so that's a consideration. I plan on using it with my Nikon 60mm macro, Olivier.

What have you guys used personally? what mm size?

the number of stops you lose is dependant on the length of the tubes. If you bring a tripod to Andy's meeting I can let you sample. I have some that Renee gave to Steve68 (that I haven't remembered to hand off yet) and another one that she gave to me (thanks again, Renee, I love it :) ). You're welcome to play. Some are kenco and one is Nikon.

cool, will do. awesome.

don't be concern with too much of loosing Fstop in extension tube with digital camera. you can always increase your ISO to higher to compensate for speed lost. I am comming from film so 2 stops is a big deal for me with fuji velvia 50 or neopan 50 camera handheld. you will lose 2 stops with extension that give you 1:1 if my memory serve me well. it is a ratio of extension tube with lens and macro factor.

I use nikon D300 with Tamron 180mm macro lens. I use this lens from my nikon F5 film camera. I also have various lens such as 105mm ais lens, 17-35mm AFS, 18-70mm, 35-70 lens.

for macro work, I use 180mm lens and 105 with 3 different extension tubes

And if you're using a tripod to capture the image the loss of light is compensated by a longer shutter time. The only time that loss is signficant is when you're trying to capture fast moving fish, in which case I'd shoot without the tubes and crop the image.
