Sorry to go all Billy Mays on you guys but this is really important. Our hobby is under attack and there are groups and legislation being looked at right now that would shut our hobby down. Please read the links below and donate if you can. Even if you cannot donate, pass the word around and write your legislators. It is time for our voice to be heard.

The Federal Government says, "We find that the petition presents substantial information indicating that the petitioned action may be warranted for the orange clownfish (Amphiprion percula). We will conduct a status review for this species to determine if the petitioned action is warranted. To ensure that the status review is comprehensive, we are soliciting scientific and commercial information pertaining to Amphiprion percula from any interested party." See regulations.gov.
I pulled the original petition and put it in the dropbox. If anyone wants to read it, PM me with your email address and I'll send you a link.

It was targeting:

Amphiprion percula (Orange clownfish) -
the subject of this fact-finding /comment.
Chromis atripectoralis (Black-axil chromis)- denied at present.
Chromis viridis (Blue-green damselfish)- denied at present.
Dascyllus albisella (Hawaiian damselfish)- denied at present.
Dascyllus reticulatus (Reticulate damselfish or Two-stripe damselfish)- denied at present.
Microspathodon chrysurus (Yellowtail damselfish or Jewel damselfish) - this one is going to be subject to fact-finding /comment, it just has not happened yet.
Plectroglyphidodon dickii (Blackbar devil or Dick’s damselfish)- denied at present.
Plectroglyphidodon johnstonianus (Blue-eye damselfish)- denied at present.

All but one of the damselfish were denied protection. To read what the filer's of the petition have to say about their position, click here or read their Press Release here.

The only thing I know is within the few posts above. So are the only fish subject to limits the ones listed above? If so, the clownfish are succesfully tank bred....will this ban impact tank raised fish as well? I'm a little disappointed that they are not banning the damsels....those fish just shouldn't be available to community tanks!

Paul yes the ban would include and captive bred clowns as well. Thy are also talking about banning all species of a coral if only one group is in trouble. For example if one type I acropora is banned, they ban all acropora. That includes importation and interstate transfer.

Hi Paul,
if listed as an endangered species, interstate commerce in A. Percula will be illegal. That means the only clownfish available for sale will be those bred in the state of NJ. I am not familiar enough with NJ's endangered species regulations above the federal floor to know if it has any specific regulations on top of the federal ones. I will look into it.

If A. Percula are listed as endangered, large scale aquaculture of this species will likely disappear as the hatcheries will not be able to transport juvenile fish across state lines for sale.

The next step would be protection of the entire clown genus, llikely followed by anemones IMHO.

If it is endangered, then it should definitely be protected. But I have yet to see any evidence that it is endangered. . .
