Festing in place on wwoz New Orleans

New Orleans jazZ fest is my favorite music festival I’ve been to, and I’m lucky enough to have done it many times. This year WWOZ has been broadcasting sets from past fests and it has been awesome-from my kids to my in-laws, everyone in my house has been enjoying it and reminding me to put it on each day. Of all the great music being offered throughout this pandemic (and there’s been a lot), this has been my favorite. If you’re into this sort of thing, check it out-today and tomorrow are the last days it’s on.

It’s available on the wwoz app, streaming, or online at Festing in Place

The best thing about the fest over the years for me has been all the new bands and music types I’ve been exposed to, and the broadcast has done that well-some big names are there (last week they played a fats domino set i was at in person) but a lot of lesser known jazz fest gems. So far this year’s funnest find for us was the band chocolate milk-my son couldn’t stop cracking up when he heard their name, falling on the ground in fits of laughter-and their music was great! My best in-person memories include many on the side stages-dancing in the mud to buckwheat zydeco, leaving the mob at Dave mathews’ stage to an open blues tent hearing Walter the wolfman Washington, and spending half a day blowing off all the big names and losing control of my body to the unreal soul being thrown down in the gospel tent (talk about a new experience for a jewish kid from Long Island).

Last night’s ended with an unreal 1974 set by Dr John, Professor Longhair, and the Meters together that defined new orleans music to me.

Today‘s lineup is amazing; I’m most looking forward to Taj Mahal followed by dumpstaphunk, but I’m sure the whole day will be incredible. The lineup is posted at wwoz but to be most true to the fest, I suggest you turn it on early and often and let the music take over. Feet don’t fail me now! Enjoy!

My hometown! I love Jazz Fest, but some years the heat (and rain) can be brutal out at the Fair Grounds.
