Folks, if you've recently upgraded or renewed your annual club membership but it's still not active, please reach out to the BOD or a moderator. The PayPal system has a slight bug which it doesn't allow it to activate the account on it's own.
It's a little shady to me that the first guy on the "recommended" list is a "aquarium writer and hobbyist" - yet I can't google him anywhere...
Then the last recommendation - I've heard that the president of BAS is an intelligent guy but to allow his club to put a "seal of approval" on a product like this really makes me scratch my head. Then again BAS really hasn't been heard from since Manhattanreefs formed...just look at their "club" page on RC. I think the last person to write there was RichT...lol (in a year).
I also love the "bio bubble" on the front page. When Geico sees that gecko I'm smelling copyright infringement! Just thinking some kid will put their baby turtle or baby nem in a tank like that gets me peeved.
Anyways - from an objective point of view though, I think you are spending $250 on a pump/cannister filter that sits inside the tank. Here's an old design schematic:
.
Look at the intake....the water is being pulled in from the lower part of the tank...skimming is most effective when the surface water is "skimmed" of organics. I can't see how this skimmer would be effective. Furthermore I think the "pads/sponges" will be a pain to clean/manage.
Anyways - for $250 I think you may find better bargains from fellow reefers...
thanks phil. looking for a good way to set up tank. It looks like a corner overflow when placed in the tank and the skimmer looked pretty powerful for a 55 gal. If I bought sump, pump, protein skimmer. I'm sure I would pay a lot more than 250. I know we use what we know works but the industry does get better as we go along I was hoping maybe this was one of those.
I disagree...I think you can do it for about the same with superior products...
Remember - it's $250 with a Rio. $300 w.Mag9.5
So take this hypothetical example - you drop a tunze DOC 9005 skimmer in your corner...it runs for $255 (free ship)...if you wanted the 950gph from the mag 9.5 - just grab a seio 920 for $70...
So you're out a total $25 extra...and I'm telling you that Roger from Tunze is a FAR better rep than anyone All-Flo can provide...it's like paying $25 for customer service for the life of the skimmer.
Keep in mind though that many many tanks are kept without a skimmer and have NO Issues.
Again - everyone has different methods/ways. If you are really set on the product, ask someone who's been using it for a few months to make a better choice. Unfortunately on this thread so far I don't think we have that yet. Also-if you're really set on one, I did do a search for ya and there's a pretty good deal on ebay if you can get it. Good luck!
